Hygienic design is one of the most voted challenges (70.83%) that food manufacturers face, followed by sanitation effectiveness (20.83%) and sanitation efficiency (8.33%). This data was gathered from a survey conducted during a webinar session on ‘Sanitation and Hygiene in a Food Plant’ by Intralox.
Intralox is the leading conveyance solutions provider helping move the world’s most critical products. UMS carries products manufactured by Intralox as part of many solutions for customers to achieve optimum productivity in the factory.
What is Hygienic Design?
According to Diversey, hygienic and sanitary design is the integration of design and engineering with the full food and beverage production environment to minimise contamination risk and enable effective cleaning and sanitation.
Hygienic Design Fundamentals
Hygienic design plays an important role in food safety. According to SP Group, below are the key pillars of hygienic design:
1. Cleaning and Disinfecting
Hygienic design ensures fittings, equipment and surfaces can be adequately cleaned. It also offers companies cost savings in cleaning and disinfection operations.
Surfaces in direct contact with food must be resistant, smooth and free from any joints and fissures which could harbour dirt. Surface roughness must also be low.
3. Packaging Machinery
Packaging machinery is one example of equipment that must be accessible, easy to disassemble and allow for adequate drainage of liquids from foodstuffs and condensation.
Materials must be resistant to corrosion, hazard free, easy-to-clean and prevent microorganisms from spreading. In that respect, polymers are perfect for the food industry thanks to their properties.
In another poll created during a webinar session on ‘Sanitation and Hygiene in a Food Plant’ by Intralox, when the audience was asked what benefits will an improved sanitation effectiveness and efficiency brings to their business, 42.86% voted “quicker change-overs” while 28.57% voted less unplanned downtime and 28.57% voted less customer complaints.
Poor sanitation can really threaten both food safety and productivity of a food production plant. For that reason, food industry professionals are often caught in the middle of the competing demands of ensuring a thorough sanitation cycle and reducing downtime.
Here’s an article about “Reaching Effectiveness and Efficiency in Your Sanitation Cycle”.
Result of effective and efficient sanitation
- Safe and quality product
- More production uptime
- Waste reduction
- Just-in-time inventory (more cash)
It is a continuous process to ensure the factory is working safely and effectively.
